Private Health Insurance Inquiry

Hello everyone,

I’m in need of a medically necessary stomach repair following my pregnancies. Unfortunately, I don’t have private health insurance and I know that I will have to cover most of the costs myself.

My question is: do I have to purchase private insurance to have the procedure done at a private hospital? If that’s the case, will I need to wait 12 months before I can use it? I’ve been struggling with recurring back issues and I have a hernia, so I would really prefer to address everything in one surgery.

I’m feeling quite overwhelmed and would appreciate any guidance or advice. Thank you!

  1. I’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. Navigating health insurance and medical procedures can be really overwhelming. Here are a few points to consider:

    1. Private Health Insurance: If you plan to get private health insurance, most policies do have a waiting period for pre-existing conditions, often around 12 months. Since you mentioned that the procedure is medically necessary, you should consult with an insurance provider to see if they offer any options that might cover it sooner.

    2. Out-of-Pocket Costs: Many private hospitals will allow you to pay for the procedure out of pocket without insurance. It’s a good idea to contact the hospital directly to discuss your situation. They may also offer payment plans or financial assistance options.

    3. Consult Your Doctor: Speak with your doctor about your concerns. They might have recommendations on how to proceed or can help you with information on specialists and hospitals that handle cases like yours.

    4. Public Health Options: Don’t forget to explore public health options. Depending on your location, there may be public healthcare services that could help with your needs, especially if the repair is deemed medically necessary.

    5. Support Groups: Consider reaching out to support groups or forums for shared experiences and advice. People who have been through similar situations can often provide valuable insights.

Remember, you’re not alone in this, and it’s okay to seek help. Best of luck with your situation!
