NSW/QLD??

Hey everyone! I’m a Kiwi/Aussie citizen who has never actually lived in Australia. I grew up in New Zealand and moved to London last year, but it hasn’t been a great experience for me—I really just want to come back home. The cost of living in NZ is rising, and the wages aren’t great, so my family and friends are encouraging me to consider Australia.

My boyfriend, a science lab technician, will be joining me in October. We’re on the lookout for a coastal town since being close to the beach is a must for us. We’d like to find a 1- or 2-bedroom house or unit that won’t break the bank. While we know cities will offer more job opportunities for him, they’re also quite pricey, so he’s open to doing fruit picking for a bit to get by. I have a BA but have mostly worked in unskilled hospitality jobs since finishing university. I’m hoping to find a 9-5 job in admin or something office-related.

We love nature and art, and having a farmer’s market nearby would be a huge plus! I’d love to hear any suggestions you might have. My parents, who live in Gladstone, recommended Coffs Harbour, but I’ve read mixed reviews online about safety and issues with crime and poverty there.

Thanks in advance! 🌞

  1. Hi there! It sounds like you’re going through an exciting transition! Australia has a lot to offer, especially if you’re looking for coastal living with a good balance between work opportunities and reasonable housing costs. Here are a few suggestions that might work for you:

    1. Byron Bay: Known for its stunning beaches and vibrant arts scene, Byron Bay has a great community feel. However, it can be pricey, so keep an eye on rental markets or consider nearby towns like Mullumbimby which are more affordable.

    2. Sunshine Coast: Towns like Maroochydore or Noosa are beautiful and have a mix of beach life and a growing job market. They also have farmers’ markets which you’ll enjoy!

    3. Bellingen: Close to Coffs Harbour but with a more artsy vibe and a lower cost of living. It has a great community spirit and restaurants, cafes, and markets.

    4. Port Macquarie: This town has lovely beaches, a relaxed lifestyle, and various job opportunities. It also has a good community spirit and markets for fresh produce.

    5. Hervey Bay: A quieter town but with beautiful beaches and a laid-back lifestyle. Housing is typically more affordable here.

    6. Tweed Heads: Located near the Queensland and New South Wales border, it offers beautiful beaches and has a more affordable cost of living compared to the Gold Coast.

As for job opportunities for both you and your boyfriend, check local job boards and community groups as they often have listings. And don’t hesitate to reach out to local Facebook groups related to jobs in these areas – they can be super helpful!

While Coffs Harbour has varying opinions, many people love living there for the beaches and community, so don’t completely rule it out!

Best of luck with your move! Australia is a great place to call home. 🌏✨
