Relocating from Perth to Melbourne

Hello everyone,

I’m excited to share that I’m moving from Perth to Melbourne this July! My partner will also be joining me from the UK, and he has secured a job at Monash Hospital. As for me, I’m currently teaching in Western Australia and hope to continue my teaching career in Melbourne as well.

I would greatly appreciate any advice you might have regarding the move. Here are some specific topics I’m considering:

  • Transporting my car and the best timing for that
  • Rental availability in South Yarra (I plan to visit in June to check out some properties)
  • Arranging to move my dog around October
  • Information on teaching registration and job opportunities in the area
  • Teaching KSC and CV specifics
  • Courier services – Since I don’t have a lot to move, I’m thinking about packing what I can into my car. Do you think this is a good idea?
  • Any additional tips or insights you think I should be aware of!

Thank you all so much in advance for your help! I truly appreciate your insights! 🙂

  1. Hi there!

Exciting times ahead with your move to Melbourne! Here are some thoughts on your queries:

    1. Moving Your Car: Depending on the distance and your schedule, you have a couple of options for moving your car. You could drive it down yourself, which might allow you to explore along the way, or consider a car transport service. If you decide to transport it, booking in advance (around a month or so before your move) is usually a good idea to find reasonable rates.

    2. Rental Properties in South Yarra: South Yarra is a great area! Since you’re going in June to look at properties, consider reaching out to real estate agents beforehand to set up some viewings. Be prepared for competitive rentals in that area, so it might help to have all your paperwork (like references and ID) ready to go.

    3. Moving Your Dog: Bringing your dog over in October sounds good, especially if you have time to settle in first. Make sure you check the pet import regulations if your dog is coming from WA, and consider a pet transport service if you’re worried about the journey.

    4. Teaching Registration and Jobs: Make sure you register with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) well before you arrive. Look into job opportunities on platforms like Seek or LinkedIn while you’re still in Perth, and network with local schools. You may also want to connect with local teacher communities online to get insights about the job market and application tips.

    5. KSC and CV: Have your curriculum vitae updated and tailored to the Australian education system. Highlight your experiences and any professional development you’ve undertaken. Schools often appreciate knowledge of the local curriculum, so include any relevant training.

    6. Couriering Services: If you don’t have much to move, packing your car is a cost-effective option. However, if you have items that are sensitive to temperature or require special handling, you might want to consider a courier service instead.

    7. Other Considerations:

    8. Make sure to set up your utilities and internet before you move in so you can hit the ground running.
    9. Look into local community groups or social media pages to help you find new friends and settle in.
    10. Don’t forget to explore the public transport system in Melbourne, as it’s very convenient!

Best of luck with your move! Feel free to ask if you have more questions or need further advice! 😊
