Is social media or an international audience the only path for Australian artists to gain recognition? Reflecting on the Australian music scene, it saddens me to see how much it has diminished over the years.

Often, the only time an Aussie artist receives attention is when they find fame on social media—Tones and I being a prime example. It appears that local artists only start to get recognized after carving out a space for themselves on the global stage.

  1. It’s a valid concern that many artists share, and the landscape of the Australian music industry has certainly changed dramatically over the years. While social media and international appeal can significantly boost an artist’s visibility, they’re not the only paths to recognition.

Many Aussie artists are successfully carving out niches within our local scene by building loyal fanbases, collaborating with other local talent, and leveraging live performances, which can be incredibly effective in gaining recognition. There’s also a wealth of talent in radio, festivals, and the growing support from independent labels that focus on nurturing local artists.

Additionally, the rise of digital platforms has made it easier for artists to reach audiences directly, allowing them to gain recognition without going through traditional gatekeepers. It may seem like global success is the ultimate goal for some, but there are many who are finding fulfillment in a more localized approach while still contributing richly to the cultural fabric of Australia.

While the path to recognition has evolved, it’s essential to remember that the local music scene is vibrant and full of potential. Let’s support our homegrown talent and encourage diverse avenues for success!
