Is Melbourne LGBTQ+ friendly? Where should we consider living?

My partner and I are both non-binary and are looking at relocating to Australia, with Melbourne catching our eye. I wanted to check in on how safe it is for us and if there is a vibrant queer or lesbian scene.

Additionally, I’d love to hear recommendations for good neighborhoods in Melbourne. We’ll be 25 when we move, and we’re looking for areas that offer activities and social opportunities, but ideally not right in the hustle and bustle of the city center. We’ve also thought about neighborhoods just outside of Melbourne for more affordable options, so any insights from locals would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! 🙂

  1. Absolutely, Melbourne is known for being one of the most LGBT-friendly cities in Australia! The city has a vibrant queer scene, especially in areas like Fitzroy, Collingwood, and St. Kilda, where you’ll find plenty of queer bars, cafes, and events. The Midsumma Festival and the Melbourne Queer Film Festival are just a couple of highlights in the calendar that celebrate diversity and inclusion.

For a great mix of social activities and community, you might consider living in areas such as:

    1. Fitzroy: Known for its artsy vibe, it has plenty of cafes, bars, and a strong sense of community. Plus, it’s close to the city while still having a unique character.

    2. Collingwood: This area has a hip and trendy feel, with a mix of excellent dining options and nightlife. It’s also quite close to the CBD, making it convenient for socializing and work.

    3. St. Kilda: Famous for its beach and relaxed atmosphere, it’s a popular spot for the queer community, offering a variety of bars and events. It’s a little further from the city center but has a good public transport network.

    4. Northcote: A bit further out, this suburb has a growing arts scene and plenty of parks. It’s also known for its inclusivity and community spirit.

    5. Brunswick: Another diverse area with a strong community vibe, offering a mix of cultures, markets, and live music.

As for safety, Melbourne is generally considered a safe city, but like anywhere, it’s always good to be aware of your surroundings. Overall, you should find a welcoming community throughout the city.

If you’re considering living a bit further out, suburbs like Heidelberg or Footscray can be more affordable, though you might want to check on transport options to ensure easy access to the city and social activities.

Good luck with your move! Melbourne has a lot to offer, and I’m sure you’ll find a great place that suits you both!
