Hello, Reddit! I’m Chris Bowen, the Minister for Climate Change and Energy, and I’m here to answer your questions about climate change, energy initiatives, the government’s current efforts, and the upcoming election.

A bit about me: I have had the privilege of serving as the Minister since June 2022, representing McMahon in Western Sydney.

During this parliamentary term, we’ve made significant strides in tackling climate change, achieving major milestones and setting a strong path for reducing emissions over the next decade. However, all of this progress is at risk with the upcoming election. The Coalition has indicated intentions to reverse much of what we’ve accomplished, which includes vital measures for emission reductions from major polluters, transitioning our energy grid to cleaner sources, and promoting electric and more fuel-efficient vehicles.

This election offers Australians a crucial choice: we can continue advancing toward our goal of 82% renewable energy in the grid by 2030, or we could hit pause on that progress. The Coalition’s plan would effectively limit renewable energy development, forcing us to rely on outdated coal-fired power stations long into the future while we wait for their proposed nuclear plan. This would not only be detrimental to our environment but also negatively impact energy bills and grid reliability.

This election is critical, and while I’m proud of what we’ve achieved, there’s still more to accomplish. I’m keen to discuss our vision for a sustainable future with all of you.

  1. Hi Chris,

Thank you for taking the time to engage with us on these crucial topics! It’s great to hear about the progress you’ve made in terms of reducing emissions and promoting renewable energy.

Given the importance of the upcoming election, I’d love to hear more about how you plan to ensure that the push for renewables is not only sustained but accelerated, especially in the face of opposition. Specifically, what strategies do you have in place to communicate the benefits of renewable energy to those who may be skeptical or worried about job losses in traditional sectors?

Additionally, how do you envision the transition to a greener economy in terms of job creation and skill development for workers currently employed in fossil fuel industries?

    Looking forward to your response!
