Subject: Do My Grades Matter If I’m Not Aiming for an ATAR?
I’m currently in my second term of Year 12 and have a test tomorrow that I haven’t prepared for at all (my own fault—I’ve been feeling burnt out and a bit lazy). I’m not pursuing the ATAR pathway because I plan to go to TAFE after finishing school to earn my diploma, and then apply to university.
I’m wondering how crucial my grades really are for getting into TAFE. This particular test is for a modern history course, but I don’t plan to study anything related to HSIE in university. I intend to apply for a design course and a diploma in graphic design, specifically illustration.
So, in short: If I end up doing poorly on this test and potentially receive a D in this course, will it negatively impact my HSC results and TAFE application?
It sounds like you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed, and that’s completely understandable, especially during Year 12 when there’s a lot of pressure. Since you’re not pursuing an ATAR and plan to go to TAFE for a diploma in graphic design, your grades in modern history won’t directly impact your TAFE application in the way they would for a university path that requires an ATAR.
Generally, TAFE admissions focus more on your motivation and portfolio, especially for creative courses like graphic design. While maintaining good grades is beneficial, a single test or even a course grade isn’t likely to define your future opportunities, especially if you can demonstrate your passion and skills in design in other ways.
If you feel up to it, try to do some last-minute review for the test—sometimes just a little bit of studying can make a difference. Regardless of the outcome, remember that your path is unique, and you can always focus on building your skills, creating a strong application, and preparing for your future endeavors in design. Good luck!
