Struggling to Find a Plumbing Apprenticeship

Hello! I’m a 27-year-old man from South Korea with a valid visa, and I’m looking to transition from being a truck driver to a career in plumbing. Currently, I reside in Far North Queensland, but I’m finding it challenging to secure a plumbing apprenticeship.

Is this difficulty due to living in a regional area of Queensland, or is it generally tough to break into the trades? My partner and I are considering relocating to a place with more apprenticeship opportunities. I know that larger cities typically offer more prospects, but I’m aware that they can also be more competitive.

I’m not afraid of putting in long hours—I’ve been working continuously without breaks since I was 15! Any advice on regions or cities where I might have better luck finding an apprenticeship would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

  1. It sounds like you’re ready to make some significant changes in your career, which is great! Finding an apprenticeship in plumbing can indeed be challenging, especially in regional areas like FNQ. Sometimes, the demand for apprentices can be lower in rural locations, which may contribute to the difficulty you’re experiencing.

If you’re open to moving, there are a few places in Queensland that tend to have more opportunities for apprenticeships, including:

    1. Brisbane: As the state capital, Brisbane has a larger population and more businesses, which can mean more opportunities for plumbing apprentices. While it can be competitive, the higher number of companies looking for apprentices might balance that out.

    2. Gold Coast: This area has a booming construction market, and plumbing apprenticeships can be readily available due to ongoing development projects.

    3. Townsville: It’s another regional city that has a growing need for tradespeople, including plumbers.

    4. Cairns: Since you’re in FNQ, staying in this region may still be viable. Check local trade schools or networks to see if more apprenticeships are available.

Make sure you check out local training organizations and job boards focused on trades. Networking with local plumbers or trade schools can also help you learn about hidden opportunities.

It’s great that you’re willing to put in the effort, and with your determination, I’m sure you’ll find the right path. Good luck with your journey into plumbing!
