Navigating ADHD medication as an adult in Australia.

I have the diagnostic paperwork from my psychiatrist appointment in 2015/2016. Can I bring this to my GP to discuss the possibility of getting medication, or do I need a referral and to go through a waiting list for another psychiatrist? Is it possible to do a telehealth consultation with an online doctor, or is that unrealistic?

I’ve heard that the process has become more straightforward for those with a diagnosis, but I’d love to hear about some recent experiences.

Just to clarify, I’m not referring to medicinal cannabis.

  1. You should be able to bring your diagnostic paperwork from the psychiatrist to your GP and discuss the possibility of medication for ADHD. Many GPs in Australia are familiar with ADHD and can prescribe medication if they feel it’s appropriate, especially since you already have a diagnosis.

It’s often helpful to have a thorough discussion with your GP about your symptoms and how they impact your life. If they believe medication could be beneficial, they can prescribe it directly or potentially refer you to a specialist if needed.

Telehealth options are indeed available, and some GPs offer consultations via phone or video, which can be a convenient way to access care without long waiting lists. However, make sure the GP you choose is comfortable managing ADHD treatment.

It’s great that you’re seeking to revisit medication; many individuals find it helpful. Sharing your experiences with your GP will definitely aid in creating an effective treatment plan. Good luck!
