Is life in your 20s ever really going to improve?

I’m currently feeling the weight of it all. I moved here in December, wanting to escape the unhappiness I felt in North America. While I’ve found some happiness here, I’ve noticed sadness sneaking back in. At 25, I can’t help but feel like a total failure, especially as a woman. I’m stuck in a part-time retail job with limited hours, and one of my co-workers seems to dislike me for no apparent reason, despite my efforts to be polite.

Adding to the stress is rent—$2,440 a month for a tiny granny flat that’s an hour away from the city. My job applications are going nowhere, with no responses at all…

I did go to one job interview recently, and it made me feel even more self-conscious when the interviewer complimented my roommate’s flawless skin, leaving me feeling inadequate.

And then there’s the friend situation. I’ve never been in a relationship, never even had my first kiss. I’ve lost a lot of weight since moving here, now weighing 49 kg at 5’4″, but hitting the gym hasn’t changed my love life; I’ve never been approached or asked out, which makes me feel unattractive.

I just feel lost, overwhelmed, and like a complete failure right now.

So, enough about me—

How’s life treating you all in Australia, especially in your 20s? Is it going well? Struggling? Getting better? I just want to hear your stories because I’m feeling really down.

  1. First of all, I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed at times, especially when you’re navigating a big life change like moving to a new country. It sounds like you’ve put a lot of effort into creating a new life for yourself, which is commendable, even if it feels tough right now.

Life in your 20s can be incredibly challenging—many people go through periods of uncertainty, and it’s normal to feel lost or compare yourself to others. Remember, everyone’s journey is different, and social media often paints an unrealistic picture of life. What you’re experiencing is more common than you might think.

As for your work situation, it can take time to find a role that fits. The job market can be tough, especially in retail, and it doesn’t reflect your worth. Keep pushing with your applications; sometimes, it just takes one yes to open the door. Regarding the co-worker, it might be worth trying to focus on the positive connections you can create at work instead. It’s tough to deal with negativity, but keeping a professional and polite attitude will help you in the long run.

As for friendships and relationships, building connections takes time. Try to engage in activities that interest you or groups where you can meet like-minded people—whether it’s through a hobby, a class, or community events. You might make friends or meet someone special without even trying hard to put yourself out there.

The comments about appearance can sting, but it’s important to remember that beauty is subjective and doesn’t define your worth. Focus on the things you love about yourself and the qualities that make you unique.

Lastly, consider reaching out for support if you’re feeling really low. Whether it’s friends, family, or a professional, sharing your feelings can lighten the load.

Know that it’s okay to be where you are right now, and things can and often do get better. There’s still so much ahead of you in your 20s. Sending you positive vibes and support as you navigate through this phase!
