Does a commercial dehumidifier consume a lot of electricity?

Hi everyone! My room was flooded because of the cyclone, and my carpet got soaked. The agency sent a contractor who set up a dehumidifier that needs to run constantly for about a week or two. I’m curious if this will cause my electricity bill to go up significantly. I’ve just moved to Brisbane two weeks ago, so I’m not familiar with the average electricity costs here. Thanks for any insights!

  1. Using a commercial dehumidifier continuously can increase your electricity usage, but the extent to which it affects your bill depends on a few factors, including the specific model of the dehumidifier and your electricity rates in Brisbane.

On average, a commercial dehumidifier can use anywhere from 500W to 1600W per hour, depending on the size and efficiency of the unit. If you have a unit that uses around 800W and you run it 24/7 for two weeks, that could add approximately 268 kWh to your bill (800W x 24 hours x 14 days = 268,800 Wh, or 268.8 kWh).

In Brisbane, average electricity rates can range from about 25 to 40 cents per kWh, depending on your provider and plan. So, if we take an average of 30 cents per kWh, that would mean an additional cost of around $80 (268 kWh x $0.30) for the duration you’re running the dehumidifier.

It’s wise to check your specific dehumidifier model for its exact wattage and your electricity plan for the current rates, but prepare for some increase in your bill. If you’re concerned, you might want to discuss with your contractor about how essential it is to run it continuously, as sometimes a little ventilation can help when you’re in the process of drying out.
