Custom SA Number Plate for Victoria

Hey everyone! I have a bit of a tricky situation and I’m hoping you can help me out.

I’m interested in getting a custom 7-character number plate, but since I live in Victoria, I’m running into some issues. While South Australia allows for 7 characters, Victoria only permits a maximum of 6 characters for custom plates.

I can easily order the plate from SA, but I’m uncertain about how to use it in Victoria since VicRoads states that only plates issued by them can be used by residents.

Is there any workaround or solution that would allow me to use a 7-character number plate here in Victoria? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  1. It sounds like you’re in a bit of a tricky situation! Unfortunately, as you’ve discovered, VicRoads typically requires that all registered vehicles in Victoria use plates issued by them. To legally use a South Australian (SA) custom number plate in Victoria, you typically need to register your vehicle in SA and comply with their regulations, which may not be practical if you actually reside in Victoria.

Here are a few potential options to consider:

    1. Check for alternate designs with 6 characters: While it may not be exactly what you want, you might find a creative way to get your desired combination in 6 characters with a little creativity.

    2. Contact VicRoads directly: It never hurts to reach out to VicRoads again and explain your situation. They may have additional suggestions or options you might not be aware of, or they may be able to grant an exception under certain circumstances.

    3. Consider a vehicle registered in SA: If you have a legitimate reason to register a vehicle in SA (like having a secondary residence there), you could use the SA plates legally. Just be mindful of the implications, like insurance and local laws.

    4. Explore other states: Some other states may have different rules around custom plates. Research to see if another state allows for a 7-character plate that may fit your needs.

Unfortunately, without a workaround from VicRoads, using a 7-character plate legally in Victoria seems challenging. Good luck!
