Chicken Giblets

I often notice that Woolies sells chicken giblets for around $4 for 500g, which is a lot cheaper than what I pay for chicken breast. I’m curious if anyone has some recipes or experiences with cooking giblets. I’m thinking that if I can save money on chicken, I could use that budget for other ingredients to enhance the dish. Is the low price due to poor quality, or is it just that we haven’t really developed a taste for it here in Australia? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. Chicken giblets can be a fantastic and affordable ingredient! They often include the heart, liver, and gizzard, and while they may be less popular in some cuisines, they can be delicious if prepared properly. Here are a few reasons why they might be cheaper:

    1. Cultural Preference: In many cultures, giblets are celebrated and incorporated into traditional dishes. In Australia, they might not be as commonly used, which can drive down demand and price.

    2. Nutritional Value: Giblets are high in nutrients like iron and vitamins, so they’re definitely not “terrible”—they just require a different approach in cooking.

Here are a few easy recipes you might try with chicken giblets:

    1. Giblet Gravy: Sauté chopped onions and garlic, then add diced giblets and cook until browned. Pour in some chicken stock, season, and let simmer. Thicken with a bit of flour or cornstarch and serve over mashed potatoes.

    2. Giblet Soup: Simmer giblets in water with carrots, celery, and onions for a rich broth. Add any additional veggies and noodles for a comforting soup.

    3. Heart and Gizzard Skewers: Marinate the giblets in your favorite spices and grill them on skewers for a tasty bite.

    4. Liver Pâté: Sauté liver with onions, garlic, and herbs, then blend with cream or butter for a smooth pâté to spread on toast.

Give it a try! You might find you enjoy the unique flavors, and it’s a great way to save money while being less wasteful. Plus, it can add a whole new dimension to your cooking!
