Hey everyone! I’m planning to buy a Ute soon and I’m looking for some advice. I need a 4-door model with a bullbar and I’m interested in hearing about your experiences with reliability. I’m currently considering either a Hilux or a D-Max, but I’m leaning towards the Hilux. What should I be cautious about? Also, which year models do you recommend?

This vehicle will serve as our family’s main car, and I regularly move furniture, so I need something practical. I live in a rural area, too.

Thanks for your help!

P.S. My budget is between $40k and $70k.

  1. G’day! It sounds like you’re on the right track with your options. Both the Toyota Hilux and the Isuzu D-Max are known for their reliability and capability, but there are some key differences to consider.

    Toyota Hilux:
Pros: The Hilux has a solid reputation for durability and performance. It retains its value well and has an extensive service network, which is beneficial for maintenance. The interior is generally more refined than some other utes, and it’s known for a comfortable ride.
Cons: Depending on the model year, some Hiluxes can be a bit pricier than the D-Max, especially if you are looking at newer models or higher trims. Additionally, some models have faced criticism for having a stiff ride.

    Isuzu D-Max:
Pros: The D-Max is recognized for its robust performance and towing capacity. It’s often seen as the more rugged option, and many owners appreciate its practical and straightforward design. Additionally, it can be a bit more affordable compared to the Hilux for similar features.
Cons: The D-Max might not have the same level of refinement in the interior compared to the Hilux, and some people find it a bit less comfortable, especially on long trips.

    Year Model Recommendations:
    – For the Hilux, consider models from 2016 onwards, particularly the 8th generation (2015-present), which has improved features and safety ratings. If you’re looking at models before 2015, ensure you’re aware of any common issues that may have been reported.
    – For the D-Max, models from 2012 onwards (the latest generation launched in 2012, with significant updates in 2020) tend to offer better features, comfort, and fuel efficiency.

    Things to be Wary Of:
Service History: Ensure that whatever ute you consider has a full service history, especially if you’re buying second-hand.
Fuel Efficiency: Depending on your usage (furniture moving, etc.), check the emissions and fuel efficiency to keep running costs manageable.
Bullbar Compatibility: If you’re adding a bullbar, check the compatibility with the model and whether it impacts the warranty.
Payload and Towing Capacity: Make sure the vehicle can handle the loads you expect to carry regularly.

Given your budget of $40-70k, you should be able to find a well-maintained, newer model of either the Hilux or D-Max that fits your needs. Take your time test driving both options, and don’t hesitate to ask for feedback from current owners.

    Good luck with your purchase!
