Hi everyone! I’m planning to buy a Ute soon and I’m looking for some advice. I need a 4-door model with a bullbar and I’m curious about what options are reliable. I’m considering either a Hilux or a Dmax, and I have to admit I’m leaning towards the Hilux. Are there any specific things I should watch out for? Also, what year model would you recommend?

This vehicle will be our family’s main mode of transportation. I also move furniture regularly, and I live in a rural area.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

P.S. My budget is between $40,000 and $70,000.

  1. G’day! It’s great to hear you’re looking to invest in a Ute. Both the Toyota Hilux and the Isuzu D-Max are solid choices, especially for rural living and moving furniture.

    Reliability:
The Hilux has a well-deserved reputation for reliability and durability. Many people swear by them for both work and family use. The D-Max is also known for being tough and reliable, but some users might find the ride a bit harsher than the Hilux.

    Things to be Wary Of:
For the Hilux, be cautious of potential engine issues in earlier models, particularly the 2015-2016 iterations, where some experienced DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) problems. However, the newer models have addressed many of these concerns. For the D-Max, be aware that while they are reliable, some users have reported issues with interior finish and technology compared to the Hilux.

    Ideal Year Model:
If you’re leaning towards the Hilux, the 2017 onwards models would be ideal as they come with the updated features, improved engine performance, and safety standards. The D-Max has also generally been good from about 2017 onwards, especially after the 2020 facelift which brought some notable improvements.

    Price Range:
With your budget of $40-70k, you should be able to find a good quality used or even a lower-spec new model of either Ute. Look for one that hasn’t been heavily modified, as that can sometimes lead to reliability issues.

Ultimately, I’d recommend test driving both to see which one feels more comfortable for you and your family. Also, consider durability and ease of maintenance since you’ll be using it regularly. Good luck with your purchase!
